Omegle has Shut Down, what now?
The most popular video chatting one-to-one website, Omegle, has shut down today leaving many people disappointed and sad, but the reality of the sudden shutdown is much darker than anyone can think. The official website is now displaying a gravestone image representing the lifespan of Omegle from 2009 to 2023 and a huge message from the founder of Omegle.com LLC, Leif K-Brooks.
In this huge message to the community, he expresses his life on the internet and how he started when he was very young. In the message, his passion for software development is mentioned while he was in college and how the idea of Omegle came to his mind, a one-to-one chatting website, a simple, yet interesting idea, all for free. Leif launched Omegle.com when he was only 18 years old while still living with his parents because of his love for software development in general. His idea of how the internet worked was truly different than one of an “average user”. Omegle was released with no funding while living with his parents in Vermont.
While building and updating Omegle over the years of its activity, Leif realized the malicious way his website could be used against other people by criminals and other individuals so a team of great moderators was hired to fight against this type of illegitimate activity as well as a very well trained AI that can detect different type of illegal video material that can be shown/distributed on the website which are against the policy and TOS.
The Read Problem and Reason with Omegle
This is indeed a big issue that has been going on Omegle for many years. In the past year, there have been over 50 cases of illegal activities with underage people taking place directly on the website. This placed a huge amount of pressure on the website’s management including the founder and owner, Leif K-Brooks, mentioning in the message how he had to deal with imaginable counts of criminal activity that he never thought that he would ever see on his website this being the main reason why the website was shut down. Authorities in many countries and territories were “breathing down” on Leif’s neck and company, Omegle.com LLC, for the many counts implicating underage users on the website.
Although this is not the only website of this kind, it is clearly the most popular and this activity should not be tolerated anywhere, no matter the place, it is incredibly inhumane and disgusting. We believe that authorities are not doing enough in order to protect children from these activities and the easy-to-fall traps that happen online every day.
On the Omegle webpage, in Leif’s message, he mentioned that the internet is becoming some sort of passive TV entertainment, meaning that people/users are not interacting with each other as much as they used to be, and instead, most entertainment providers focus on screening that doesn’t involve much activity from the public, instead, users just have to watch instead of interacting with the show.
The End for Omegle.com
It is clear enough that this is the end for Omegle, it will most likely never come back, but there are many other very similar alternatives that offer the same features. This website was a huge part of the internet having over 70+ Million page views every month which is insanely high for a simple concept like this from such a little company with very little to offer. Make sure you stay safe out there no matter if you are trying to find a better alternative or just fully stopped and remember: Keep gaming!
