Introduction
With GPU prices all around, decreasing or increasing, it’s very difficult to predict the market. A lot of people fear buying GPUs due to them decreasing in price a week after the purchase! This fear leaves a lot of people with their old rigs which are not capable of running the newest titles at decent frames/FPS. Everyone would want an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU in their rig, but first, who would want to pay so much for it? You could obviously go with a lower-price option but the performance greatly decreases as the GPU model goes down. The fear of missing out is very widely met in today’s retail. People always look at the top-shelf option as being the best without realizing that is just a marketing technique. Today we are going to talk about GPU prices and if it is worth upgrading this year!
What is a GPU
If you’re living under a rock or you’re just new in the gaming PC world, a GPU (or graphics card) is a component from inside a device that allows for graphical rendering. While your CPU might also be able to render images on your screen, a GPU (graphical processing unit) is a component specially made for that purpose, giving high-quality rendering, much faster than a CPU (not all CPUs have integrated graphics, which saves on costs of manufacture). A GPU is surely expensive, but it won’t let you down. Coming with many features, lots of VRAM, plenty of CUDA cores, a generous screen resolution, and handy drivers for customization, a GPU will let you do a lot more. Gaming might be your first thought when you think of a graphics card, but when it was invented, it wasn’t meant for gaming. Of course, rendering high-quality images and assets is one of its main uses, but it was mainly used for work. Creating blueprints and calculating 3D shapes wasn’t cheap back in the 80s and 90s. You needed expensive equipment, but a handy graphics card could save the day even though it cost a fortune! When consumer graphics cards appeared, people were excited about the new technology and new companies developing shooter games in 3D.
Is it Worth Upgrading from your Current GPU?
Now the most awaited question… Is it the time for upgrading? Well the answer really depends, and the question is more pointed towards, is your current GPU great for your favorite games? Do you want to play newer titles? We personally think this question on a 4-year timespan. If your GPU is older than 4 years you can consider upgrading. Otherwise, it will most likely run any game unless it is a budget GPU made for low-cost computers. Though, if you wish to upgrade and want to save money, you can also look at manufacturers like Colorful or Palit that offer their models with similar specifications and the same chipset at a lower price than ASUS, Gigabyte, or EVGA. The quality of the build might not be the same but the performance is close enough to not be noticeable, and the drivers will always be the same!
Conclusion
Your money is valued over the GPU you choose, so make sure you calculate everything before you choose to upgrade. Make sure you have the compatible components for a new GPU (mostly the PSU matters, a new graphics card can come with a very high TDP/power usage). Consider other manufacturers like Palit or Colorful that have lower costs and do not ignore cheaper models from the same series, the top-of-the-line is not always the best! Remember the 4-year timespan of the graphics card, mostly any GPU younger than 4 years can run any game on the market with decent framerate. We will keep you updated with the best news in tech and of course, graphics cards!
